Engines & Transmissions
The standard engine for the 2019 model year in both the 2500 and 3500 models is a 6.4-liter Hemi V8. This engine cranks out up to 410 horsepower and 429 pound-feet of torque. Ram mates this engine to a smooth-shifting and proven TorqueFlite 8HP75 8-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy, performance, and drivability are optimized with over 40 individual shift maps. Eliminating a mechanical linkage between the gear selector and transmission, this transmission utilizes shift-by-wire technology. This truck can handle big loads! When properly equipped it can handle payloads up to 4,050 pounds and tow up to 17,390 pounds.
The second engine found within the Heavy-Duty truck lineup is a Cummins Turbo Diesel that earns a performance boost in the 2019 model year, pumping out up to 370 horsepower and 850 pound-feet of torque. This engine comes mated to a significantly updated version of the 68RFE 6-speed automatic transmission. New variable-force solenoid controls for the torque converter improve this transmission's shift quality. Improving shift feel when transitioning from park to reverse is a new reverse accumulator. Shifting from drive to park has also been enhanced with refined hydraulic control. This engine can tow up to 19,780 pounds!
The most powerful engine available for the new Heavy-Duty Ram Trucks is a brand-new Cummins 6.7-liter inline-6 Turbodiesel. This high-output engine cranks out up to 400 horsepower and 1,000 pound-feet of torque. This engine was overhauled for the 2019 model year. Changes include a 60-pound weight loss and a cylinder block is created with compacted graphite iron. Other new parts include a new cast-iron cylinder which boasts new rocker arms, exhaust springs and valves. Stronger and lighter pistons used include new low-friction rings that connect to the crankshaft via new bearings and freshly designed connecting rods. This engine also boasts a new exhaust manifold where an enhanced variable-geometry turbocharger is mounted. Ram pairs this engine with the Aisin AS69RC six-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. This transmission was specifically engineered to handle this increased vehicle weight ratings and the engine's colossal torque output. Delivering more precise and faster shifts, this transmission uses a new dual-core processor and a transmission controller. This powertrain is the most capable, towing up to 35,100 pounds and handling payloads up to 7,680 pounds.
All Ram Heavy-Duty trucks use a rotary e-shift dial mounted to the left of the instrument panel's center console. This configuration frees up valuable cabin space that is normally taken up by a column-mounted or console-mounted shift lever.
